Commentary

Exposing the often, incongruous ways in which human settlement merges with nature, Oscar Palacio’s photographs explore our ongoing attempts to screen out the wild while paradoxically adopting more orderly, manufactured facsimiles of the very nature we seek to cast out. In Grass over Asphalt, the earth—as well as the insects and water it contains—is covered over with black tar only to be re-covered with carefully cut strips of sod to create a “natural,” albeit much tidier lawn.
